Kalmia latifolia, Mountain laurel flowers, Howard County, Md, Helen Lowe Metzman
Mountain Laurel, Kalmia latifolia. One of the last woodland bloomers in late May and early June in our part of the world. Seeing a woodland in the urban troughs of the Mid-Atlantic filled with blooming Mountain Laurel always moves me, a small wink from the Nature to me that wholeness and complexity have not been completely replaced by the mail order trees of the Suburban grid.
A good place to fine a few big bumble bees too. Maybe even some late big Andrena. Specimen and picture taken by Helen Lowe Metzman, Howard County, Maryland.
