Paranthidium jugatorium, m, ga, baker, back

Why do you insist, Pilgrim, on planting your garden with geraniums, tea roses, and begonias? You could be planting your garden to Woodlands sunflowers and then you would have the opportunity to help out the uncommon and undoubtedly declining Paranthidium jugatorium. For this bee, in the eastern part of the United States, seems only to want to feed its babies with the pollen of this plant. In the western part of its range, likely it is feeding its babies pollen from closely related species. Small things like this becomes your responsibility for saving the world just as riding your bicycle instead of taking the car might be. Another specimen from Sabrie Breland from the wonderful South Georgia.

The grass so little has to do,

A sphere of simple green,

With only butterflies to brood,

And bees to entertain,

- Emily Dickinson. Original public domain image from Flickr
