"Alackaday! I am fallen so low in place. I can reward thee only with niggardly thanks." Restoration of an illustration to Oscar Wilde's The Duchess of Padua, by an uncredited American artist. There was a lot of random dirt and random ink spots (you can tell they\'re not part of the art as they were on the border too). Took a few hours, but wasn't too bad, on the whole - just lots of little stuff. Another of the things I've had sitting around half-finished for years.I discovered there's almost no images for this play in existence, apparently (it is one of Wilde's most obscure works) so I thought I'd correct this. However, such research also showed that finding out the uncredited artist is unlikely, unfortunately.Source:The original image is, of course, out of copyright due to being an American work from before 1923.Oh, yes: the grey cast to the image probably marks it as a photogravure. Those tend to be a little darker than the page itself, but have very fine gradients of shade.
