Interior view of the Hubbell Trading Post, a National Historic Site administered by the U.S. National Park Service near Ganado, a settlement on Navajo Nation land in far-northeast Arizona.
Long a trading interface between Navajos and white settlers, the post was purchased by John Lorenzo Hubbell in 1878 — ten years after Navajos were allowed to return to the Ganado region from their U.S.-imposed exile in Bosque Redondo, near Fort Sumner, New Mexico. This ended what is known in Navajo history as the "Long Walk of the Navajo." Original image from Carol M. Highsmith’s America, Library of Congress collection. Digitally enhanced by rawpixel.
