Commissioned in 1895 by the obsevatory’s founder, Percival Lowell, the firm of Alvan Clark & Sons of Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, built the 24-inch (61-centimetre) aperture f/11.3 refractor telescope. Since its completion the following year, the telescope has been in regular use to view the heavens. The scope was restored in 2015. Established in 1894, Lowell is among the oldest astronomical observatories in the United States. In 2011, it was named one of "The World's 100 Most Important Places" by Time magazine.
