From Ship to Surgery: The Journey of a Young Patient with Oral Cancer at NMCSD.

SAN DIEGO (Jan. 20, 2021) Surgeons assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) observe plastic surgeons harvest a fibula during an immediate jaw reconstruction with 3D-printed teeth in one of NMCSD’s operating rooms Jan. 20. The procedure was performed by teams from the hospital’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology Departments. The surgery comprised of not only cancer removal, but the reconstruction of a jaw using a section of the patient’s fibula, the smaller of the two lower leg bones. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many facets of healthcare are conducted, and NMCSD has adapted some of its techniques and practices to keep both staff and patients safe while delivering the high-quality healthcare they’ve come to expect. NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research.
