In April 2017, Redding Dirt Riders hosted the annual Shasta Dam Grand Prix as part of the AMA District 36 race series.
Almost 500 riders took to the 18.5 mile 3 lap course to see who could make it through the tough, rocky terrain of Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area. "This is a great race and place for the entire family to come out and enjoy OHV riding on public lands," said Mike Mitchell, Redding Dirt Riders member.
The Chappie-Shasta OHV Area encompasses 52,000 acres and over 200 miles of roads and trails. Elevations range from 1000 to 5000 feet with a wide variety of topography, soil and vegetation types. The Chappie-Shasta OHV Area is open year-round and has camping accommodations adjacent to the main staging area at the Shasta Campground. The campground is located at the base of Shasta Dam and offers 27 campsites for tents and recreational vehicles for a small fee. Hookups are not available. The campground has vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, trash collection and potable water.
