USAID contributions to UNICEF during COVID-19

Lia, 23, is helping her daughter, Nur Halizha, 6, wash her hands at her home in East Jakarta, Indonesia on 4 September, 2020. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Lia and Nur Halizha wash their hands more frequently in their daily lives. According to Lia, washing hands is one way to fight Covid-19.

Indonesia is among the countries in southeast Asia most-affected by COVID-19. The pandemic is reversing recent health and development gains with severe and sustained consequences for children.

Specific vulnerabilities relate to reduced access to essential health and nutrition services including basic immunization, treatment of severe acute malnutrition, poor learning outcomes related to school closure and limited remote learning options, and expanded alternative childcare needs due to health and economic effects of COVID-19 on caregivers and communities.

From the outset, UNICEF Indonesia has been working closely with the Government of Indonesia and partners, including USAID, to address the immediate and longer-term effects of COVID-19 on children.
