At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, zinc oxide is a material with applications in a whole range of areas- including electronics, optics, nuclear science and medicine. Here, chemical reactions produced by high temperature treatment in zinc metal vapor have produced morphological changes on the surface of a zinc oxide single crystal. Optical interference contrast microscopy reveals the zinc oxide surface topology in the form of color variations. This morphological information would be destroyed by traditional polishing of the sample surface.
