Chickasaw Nation Dancers from Oklahoma, perform a Peace Song, Stomp Dance Song, and a Warrior Song; the women wear antique Box Turtle shells, with river pebbles inside them, to create instrumental rhythmic shakers worn on the lower leg for the dances, during the Poarch Band of Creek Indians’ Southeastern Indian Festival on Thursday, April 3, 2014, near Atmore, Alabama.
The Box Turtle shells can not be replaced, so modern shakers are made from tin cans. For more information, please see the Flickr photo album at flic.kr/s/aHsmPdtuU2 and the website usda.gov
