Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PBCI) Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve (MBWR) Longleaf pine forest, near Atmore, in rural Escambia County, Alabama, on Saturday, April 5, 2014.
Over the past several years, about one million long leaf seedlings have been planted at the reserve. A variety of plants grow around it, helping the soil and wildlife. A prescribed burn of these understory plants will reveal young longleaf pine trees that are about a foot tall. The burn will help provide nutrients and additional sunlight to the young trees. The grass will grow back. Some of the longleaf pine trees show the black and brown signs of burning. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung. Original public domain image from Flickr
