Planes in flight. The ship in the foreground is a C-46 transport, originally designed as a commercial plane to carry a crew of five men and thirty-six passengers. Its load capacity in military service has been greatly increased. The more distant plane is a P-40 fighter, distinguished for its effectiveness in middle-altitude work with the RAF (Royal Air Force) in England and Africa, with the AVG (American Volunteer Group--Flying Tigers) in China and with the AAF (Army Air Force) in the South Pacific.
